Product Review: Hercules Sagemann Seamless Tooth Comb

The seamless comb. A thing of legend in the healthy hair journey community. I've read a lot about the seemingly wondrous and magical powers of this comb. So (finally) when I came into some extra cash I decided to give it a try.

I had a couple of questions about this going in and I'm guessing if you're reading this you do too. So I'll do a bit of Q&A first before my review.

What is a seamless comb?

Pick up your fav wide tooth comb and take a look at the teeth. Do you see a slightly raised ridge running down the middle? That bit where the dirt and grease accumulates after multiple uses? That's a seam and it's caused by the way the comb is made. So apparently most combs are made by basically fusing two halfs together. The seam is where they were joined. A SEAMLESS comb is made from a mold of plastic. There's nothing to fuse so there's no seam.

What's the big deal about the seam?

If your hair is fragile or dry or knotted or just acting up, passing a ridge through it can cause breakage and irritate the cuticle. Most of the time there are extra bits of plastic sticking out, or the seam wasn't filed down properly and hair can get caught in it and break off. Going seamless takes that away.

Ok. So tell me about this product!

First, it's ridiculously hard to find a seamless comb. I went to my trusted source Amazon and found two products with mixed reviews. The cricket brand of comes and this conair one that was "infused with argan oil". They were both relatively cheap but like I said...mixed reviews. I've reached the point where I want just the best for my hair and if I'm able to afford it. Why not. So I went for the big guns. The Hercules Sagemann .... basically the LV of seamless combs.  Two hair bloggers I read had already raved about it (Dabs from naija hair can grow and jen from just grow already) so I was convinced.
Price wise? The Magic Star  Jumbo Comb is currently selling at $19.50 (it's a sale apparently) before tax at hotcombs.net.
They do occasionally have coupon codes so I'd suggest searching around for a workable coupon code.

Well?!!! Did it work?!

Not gonna lie. I was impressed. I bought the magic star wide tooth comb  and a "detangling" comb and they're both quite lovely. Now I want to manage your expectations. There might still be breakage.
But it likely won't be because of something the comb is doing. Combing technique is still very important.
And you still have to use a lot of conditioner or detangler to help soften the hair and make it easier to detangle.

How I use them1] Slather on conditioner of choice
2] Separate into sections and finger detangle to get the big knots out
3] Use the jumbo comb. Start from the bottom and work your way up. Marvel at the difference in comb resistance between relaxed hair, texlaxed hair and stubborn new growth.
4] Use the detangling comb for a final pass through.

Verdict
I definitely saw a 60+% reduction rate in the number of broken hairs on the comb.  Both combs have good grip and stayed in my hand even after the 10th heavily conditioned section (I have a big head).Combing was easier and less stress free because there was no snap crackle or pop.
Two big thumbs up!

  1. Nice! Girl I know what you mean, I had yet to find a truly seamless comb, I have one at the moment that's decent enough, but I may give your Sagemann Comb a try!
